“10/29/87: A pair of F40PHs bring in a passenger train past the electrical substation that once was the spot of the excelllently awesome PRR Frefighthouse. Note the pair of cool express boxcars in front of the baggage car.”

The Sunset Limited was inaugurated in 1894, but its name comes from a pre-Civil War route: a train that departed Harrisburg, Tex., at sunrise would arrive at the route’s terminus in Columbus, 80 miles away, at sunset. Today it takes two sunsets, and two sunrises, for the Sunset Limited to reach its destination — provided there aren’t delays.
Great observational journalism. Nathaniel Rich takes us on a journey not only through the US unknown country, but through people’s lives. I’m half tempted to try this trip myself one day - because, as one of the travellers says, “I just don’t want to be like those older people who didn’t do anything with their lives. I want to have stories.” That’s an admirable way to live.
